How Much Does SEO Cost? Prices for Small Businesses in the US and Australia

By Ryan Malaluan, CAPM®October 22, 20269 min read

Most small businesses pay $500 to $5,000 a month for SEO. In the US, freelancers average $1,348 a month and agencies $3,209, according to Ahrefs' poll of 439 providers. Australian agencies quote about $1,250 to $3,000 a month for entry-level work. A Philippines-based freelancer charges roughly $11 to $20 an hour.

I'm Ryan Malaluan, a CAPM®-certified SEO specialist in Kidapawan City, Philippines, and I've done link building and SEO for overseas businesses since 2018. This guide pulls together published price data for the US, Australia and the Philippines so you can judge a quote against real numbers.

How much does SEO cost per month?

For a small business in the US, SEO usually costs $500 to $5,000 a month. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers and found that 63% of businesses spend between $500 and $5,000, inside an overall range of $250 to $10,000. The average is $2,917 a month, but an average hides the split that matters most: who you hire.

The table puts the sources side by side. Treat every figure as a benchmark, not a quote. Each source measures something slightly different, and the Australian and Philippines rows come from smaller samples than the Ahrefs poll.

ProviderTypical priceSource
US freelancer$1,348 a month on average; $30 to $100 an hourAhrefs; Upwork
US agency$3,209 a month on averageAhrefs

Philippines-based freelancer$11 to $20 an hourUpwork

The two Australian agencies quote in dollars without naming the currency. I treat their figures as Australian dollars because they price for Australian clients. Upwork lists its rates in US dollars.

What does SEO pricing look like for a small business?

Small businesses sit at the lower end. Ahrefs puts the average cost of local SEO at $1,557 a month and notes that a very small business with basic needs could pay less. About 42% of the providers it polled charge between $250 and $1,000 a month.

In Australia, Margin Media says small businesses can expect to pay $1,500 to $2,500 a month. Temerity Digital gives $1,250 to $3,000 for entry-level packages and $3,000 to $6,000 or more for a tougher market. Both are agencies, so read those figures as agency prices.

Competition moves the price as much as business size does. A plumber in a small town and a plumber in Sydney may both employ five people, yet they need different amounts of work to win the same search. The more sites you have to beat, the more links and content you have to build.

How do SEO providers charge: retainer, project or hourly?

Ahrefs found that 78.2% of providers charge a monthly retainer, 48.9% charge per project and 34.8% charge by the hour. The shares add up to more than 100% because many providers offer more than one model.

  • Monthly retainer: ongoing work for a fixed fee. The most popular band is $501 to $1,000 a month.
  • Per project: a fixed price for a defined job such as an audit, a rebuild or a one-off link campaign.
  • Hourly: suits ad hoc advice. The most common hourly rate is $100 to $150 overall and $75 to $100 for local SEO.

For a small business, a one-off audit followed by a monthly plan is usually the cleanest way to start. You pay once for the diagnosis, then for the work it recommends.

What drives the cost of SEO?

Four things move the price more than any others. The first is scope: Temerity Digital separates basic SEO, a quick tidy-up of on-page work, from full SEO that adds technical fixes, content and strategic link building, and prices them very differently. The second is competition. A crowded market such as finance or real estate needs a more aggressive programme than a niche with few rivals, and harder keywords take more effort to win.

The third is who does the work. Upwork notes that specialists in technical SEO or e-commerce SEO charge premium rates, and that link building usually calls for an experienced specialist because outreach and quality control take judgement. The fourth is location. Geography shapes rates, which is why the same hour of SEO work is priced differently in the US, Australia and the Philippines.

What does a monthly SEO price usually include?

Temerity Digital describes a typical retainer as a mix of on-page optimisation, content creation, link building and performance tracking. That matches how I scope work: research and on-page fixes first, then content and links, then a report that shows what changed. Ask every provider to name which of those pieces your fee covers, and how many of each you receive.

Also ask about AI search. Temerity points out that its ranges likely exclude SEO for AI search, which is becoming a service of its own. If you want your business cited in AI answers as well as ranked in Google, confirm whether that work is in the price or billed separately.

Is a freelancer or an agency cheaper?

Freelancers cost less. Ahrefs found that agencies charge 138% more than freelancers, at $3,209 a month against $1,348. For local SEO the gap narrows to $1,819 against $1,150. Experience also moves the price: providers with two or more years of experience charge 33% more, and consultants average $3,250 a month.

A lower price does not always mean a smaller scope, but it does mean a smaller team. One freelancer does the research, the writing and the outreach, so capacity and availability matter. An agency gives you account managers and specialists, and you pay for that structure.

Whichever you pick, ask for a written monthly scope: the pages optimised, the links built and the report you will receive. Two quotes at the same price can buy very different amounts of work.

Does SEO cost less from a Philippines-based specialist?

Per hour, yes. Upwork shows typical rates of $11 to $20 an hour for SEO experts in the Philippines, $21 to $55 in Australia and $30 to $100 in the United States. Twenty hours of work a month would cost roughly $220 to $400 at the Philippines rates, $420 to $1,100 at the Australian rates and $600 to $2,000 at the US rates. That is my arithmetic from Upwork's ranges, not a quote, and a real retainer often needs more hours.

The lower rate comes with trade-offs, mainly a 12 to 16 hour time difference from the US mainland and the need to vet who you hire. I cover both in my guide to outsourcing SEO to the Philippines.

What does the first stretch of SEO look like? An example from my own site

In my 16 October 2026 audit of this site, Google Search Console showed 197 impressions and 12 clicks between August and October, at an average position of 34.1. GA4 had no key events yet. SE Ranking put my Domain Trust at 14, with 7 referring domains and 52 backlinks. The sites outranking me for "seo specialist philippines" have a Domain Trust of 38 to 43 and between 51 and 350 referring domains.

That gap shows where the money goes. Closing it takes links and content, month after month, not a one-time fix. The top project in my portfolio reached 491K backlinks and a peak Domain Rating of 82, and numbers like that come from months of link building. That is why I treat time as part of the price.

It also explains why I distrust fast promises. Ahrefs checked 1 million random URLs and found that only 1.74% of newly published pages reached Google's top 10 within a year. When it filtered to 2 million non-empty English pages, the figure was 6.11%.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

It is worth it when one new customer covers a meaningful share of the monthly fee and you can wait. Take the Ahrefs freelancer average of $1,348 a month, which is $16,176 a year. If a new customer is worth $800 in profit, you need about 20 customers a year, or 1.7 a month, to break even. At $200 profit per customer you need about 81 a year. These profit figures are assumptions for illustration, so swap in your own.

Time is the other half of the sum. Upwork says you can typically expect noticeable improvement within three to six months, and the Ahrefs data above is a reason to budget for longer. SEO suits a business that can fund six months or more before judging it. Businesses where one job is worth far more than a month of fees, such as roofing, electrical or building work, tend to reach break-even sooner.

SEO is a poor fit if you need leads next week, or if your margin per customer is so thin that the break-even number is out of reach. Referrals or paid ads are better short-term tools in that case.

What should a small business budget for SEO?

  • Around $400 a month: roughly 20 to 36 hours of work at Philippines-based freelance rates. That is enough for focused work on a few pages, not a full programme.
  • $500 to $1,000 a month: the most popular retainer band in the Ahrefs poll. It suits one service area, such as local SEO for a single city, with a freelancer.
  • $1,000 to $3,000 a month: covers the Ahrefs freelancer average and the Australian entry-level agency band. There is room for content, links and reporting together.
  • $3,000 a month and up: matches the US agency average and Australian mid-range packages. It fits competitive niches and businesses with several locations.

Start from a goal, such as a target number of enquiries a month, then work back to a budget. A budget with no goal tends to buy activity instead of results.

How do I read an SEO quote?

Ask five questions before you sign. What exactly do I get each month, in pages, links and reports? Who does the work? How are links built, and from where? How often will I see results reported, and in what form? What happens if I stop, including contract length? A promise of guaranteed rankings should make you cautious.

FAQs About SEO Costs

How much does SEO cost per month for a small business?

Most small businesses pay between $500 and $5,000 a month. Ahrefs found that 63% of businesses fall in that range, with local SEO averaging $1,557 a month. Australian agencies quote about $1,500 to $2,500 a month for small businesses. A Philippines-based freelancer is usually cheaper per hour, at roughly $11 to $20.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

It is worth it when one new customer covers a meaningful part of the monthly fee and you can wait at least six months. At a $1,348 monthly freelancer fee, a business earning $800 profit per customer needs about 1.7 new customers a month to break even. It is a poor fit if you need leads next week.

Why do SEO quotes vary so much?

Scope, competition and experience all change the price. Ahrefs found that providers with two or more years of experience charge 33% more, and agencies charge 138% more than freelancers on average. Two quotes at the same price can also buy very different amounts of work, so compare written monthly scopes, not totals.

Is cheap SEO under $500 a month worth it?

It can be, if the scope is small and clearly written. Ahrefs found that 42% of providers charge between $250 and $1,000 a month. A $400 budget buys roughly 20 to 36 hours at Philippines-based freelance rates. It will not fund a broad programme, and very cheap work often cuts corners that can hurt rankings.

Does a Philippines-based SEO cost less than a US or Australian one?

Per hour, yes. Upwork lists typical rates of $11 to $20 for the Philippines, $21 to $55 for Australia and $30 to $100 for the United States. You trade the lower rate for a time difference of 12 to 16 hours from the US mainland, so check how the specialist reports and communicates.

How long before I see results from SEO?

Upwork suggests noticeable improvement within three to six months. Ahrefs found that only 1.74% of new pages reached the top 10 within a year across a broad sample, and 6.11% when it filtered to non-empty English content. Plan for at least six months before you judge the investment.

Should I pay for SEO per project or monthly?

Most providers use monthly retainers, 78.2% according to Ahrefs, and 48.9% also charge per project. A one-off audit followed by a monthly plan is a common way to start, because you pay once for the diagnosis and then for the work it recommends.
